In The Same Way We Celebrate Iconic American Friends- Celebrate Yours!
June 8 is National Best friend’s day, where we in America celebrate the closest and dearest friend to our heart- our best friend.
Best friendship has always been significant throughout American history and has produced some of the most incredible achievements and moments within our culture.
You can bet any of these five famous duo’s would've gifted one another a personalised gift.
Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe.
Both insanely talented women- Ella an iconoclastic jazz singer, Monroe a Hollywood actress- Monroe and Fitzgerald rose to stardom in the 1950s and are now two of the most iconic women of American History.
But what you may not know about their friendship is that Marilyn Monroe was instrumental in helping Ella Fitzgerald access the platform that initiated her much deserved fame.
Fitzgerald truly became a mainstream superstar after she performed at the Mocambo nightclub in Hollywood, a gig which never would have been possible if it wasn't for Monroe. Due to the racism of the era, the owner of the nightclub refused to book Fitzgerald, despite knowing of her talent.
This all changed when Monroe, a huge fan of Fitzgerald, called the manager and told him if Fitzgerald performed she would attend and sit in the front row. This promise not only landed Ella the gig but also drew swarms of paparazzi to her performance, and her career then completely took off.
Ella and Monroe from that point forward were extremely close friends, supporting each other through difficult industries and difficult times. Fitzgerald says after Mocambo she “never had to play a small jazz club again.”
In the same way, Monroe gave Ella a whole new opportunity for her career, you could give your best friend a special gift, from the FamilyGifts gifts for best friend collection.
Buster Keaton and Harry Houdini
Harry Houdini is best known for his magical antics and Buster Keaton for his acting in the silent films of the ’20s. What you may not know, however, is that not only did they become close friends, but Houdini gave Keaton his stage name.
Keaton’s father and Houdini were business partners when he was growing up.
One day, when Harry Houdini was visiting Keaton’s family, Keaton then aged six and called Joseph Frank Keaton, fell down the stairs. Houdini remarked Keaton could take a “buster”, and from that point onward, Joseph Keaton was known by all as Buster Keaton.
If you have a friend who has had as much of a significant impact on your life as Houdini on Keaton’s, make sure you let them know with one of our premium personalizable gifts from the Family Gifts gift for best friend collection.
Colonel Sanders and J.Edgar Hoover
Do you have a friend you truly admire in life? Well, you and Colonel Sanders, the founder of fast-food brand KFC are more alike than you would think.
Colonel Sanders had a deep admiration for FBI head J.Edgar Hoover and made numerous attempts throughout his life to start a bromance.
He was constantly inviting Hoover to birthdays, celebrations and BBQ cookouts. Excerpts from the FBI file kept on Sanders during this time attest to this fact, as most of the entries are birthday invitations addressed to Hoover!
Want to let someone know you truly admire and care about them without an FBI file? Buy one of Family Gifts premium gifts for your best friend today.
Joe Louis and Max Schmeling
Both members of the boxing hall of fame, media created the myth of a rivalry between Louis and Schmeling during the 1930s.
Schmeling was a German who had an undesired fan- Adolf Hitler. And Louis was one of America’s first famous black athletes.
When Schmeling defeated Louis in 1936 its coverage was imbued with racist undertones- Schmeling exalted as an Aryan hero. In 1938 when they had a rematch, it was painted as the de-facto battle between Nazism and Americanism, which Louis won.
In reality, neither of them were enemies or wanted the symbolism others projected onto them. After World War II they reconnected and became incredibly close friends, to the point when Louis passed away in 1981 Schmeling helped pay for his funeral.
Define your relationship like they did with your best friend on your own terms, with one of our fully personalizable gifts.
Helen Keller and Mark Twain
Helen Keller, a deaf and blind author, activist and lecturer had some pretty cool friendships.
In addition to being close to Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, she was chummy with gifted author Mark Twain.
They met by pure chance at a networking event when Keller was 15, and although Twain was in his late fifties they became close friends.
He supported her work immensely, and when she published her autobiography at age 22 that made her story recognised today, Twain wrote to let her know how brilliant he thought it was.
Got a friendship like this- full of support, which transcends boundaries? Let your Mark Twain know with one of our personalised gifts.
